Why International Women’s Day Is More Than Just a Celebration

Why International Women’s Day Is More Than Just a Celebration

Annually, every 8th of Marchwe come together to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). It’s a special day dedicated to honouring all women across the world, across different industries, from pioneers in science and politics to everyday heroes shaping their communities. But IWD is not just about the fun celebration—it’s also a call to action for gender equality, women’s empowerment, and lasting societal change.

While it’s wonderful to see women receiving appreciation on this special day, the real impact of IWD comes from what happens beyond the celebrations.

Why does International Women’s Day matter? How can we ensure it leads to meaningful progress for women everywhere? Let’s explore.

A History Rooted in Activism

Unlike other special occasions, International Women’s Day wasn’t created as a feel-good holiday—it was held to call for activism and a fight for women’s rights. In fact, it was in the early 1990’s when the first official Women’s Day was observed, to address demands for better working conditions, fair wages, and voting rights for women. As years passed by, it has evolved into a global movement advocating for gender equality, economic independence, and breaking down all societal barriers that hold women back.

However, even after more than a century, the fight is still far from over. There are still a lot of women who face challenges like the gender pay gap, workplace discrimination, and underrepresentation in leadership roles.

May IWD serve as a powerful reminder to all of us that while we celebrate progress, we must also continue in supporting this movement and aspire for change.

Women Supporting Women: The Power of Community

One of the strongest messages of International Women’s Day is that women supporting women can create real change. We wanted to build a world where women lift each other up, give mentorship, support one another and create a collective empowerment that will lead to growth and success.

How You Can Support Other Women

- Look for a woman in your field who needs a mentor or sponsor. Share your knowledge, approach and create new doors for others.

- Advocate for fair policies in your workplace, from equal pay to parental leave.

- Recognise and amplify women’s voices by supporting women-led businesses, authors, or creatives.

- Learn to speak up against discrimination, in all places, be it in the workplace, social settings, or online spaces.

Supporting each other can break barriers, create opportunities to grow, and accelerate progress.

Make the Change Last Beyond March

IWD shouldn’t just be about one day of appreciation—its message should promote and push actions all year round. If you don’t have idea yet how you can keep the momentum going, continue reading:

Educate yourself and others

By staying informed about the issues affecting women globally, you can continue advocating for IWD mission. Read books, watch documentaries, and follow organisations that work towards gender equality and women’s rights. The more we understand, the better we can advocate for change.

Challenge gender stereotypes

From childhood, many girls are taught to be “polite,” “quiet,” or “nurturing,” while boys are encouraged to be “leaders” and “risk-takers.” Question these stereotypes, and encourage young girls to dream big, take challenges, and pursue any career they actually desire.

Support female entrepreneurs and creators

A simple buying from women-owned businesses or supporting female artists, writers, and leaders can also create economic independence and recognition for all women across industries.

Get involved in women’s causes

Start supporting organisations or programs that fight for women’s rights, whether through volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness, it can really make a big difference.

Consider causes that support:

- Women’s shelters and domestic abuse survivors

- Girls’ education and scholarships

- Equal rights policies and advocacy groups

Why International Women’s Day Matters

International Women’s Day  (IWD) is more than just a special celebration—it’s a movement. While it’s wonderful to give flowers or messages of appreciation to every woman in your life during this day, the real impact comes when we use this day as a reminder to push for what really matters. May we continue advocating for change, challenge inequalities, and create great opportunities for future generations of women.

So, this 8th March, may you reflect on the real meaning of IWD. Think of any good thing you can do to make a difference. Support the women in your life—not just today, but every day because when we commit to real action, we move closer to a world where gender equality isn’t just a goal, but a reality.
